Our Story
UK Black in Gov CIC began as a simple idea shortly after our founder joined the Civil Service having worked in the public sector for several years. Listening to the different stories of long-standing public-sector workers who felt there was a glass ceiling to their progression, that there was no professional community to engage and network with to develop upwards on the career ladder.
Many of the Black and Mixed heritage public sector workers didn’t feel valued or recognised for the valuable contributions they were making to the British public.
Similarly, during opportunities mentoring young people through various initiatives there was a common theme observed in that young Black and Mixed heritage individuals didn’t see value in working in the public sector.
Seeking to overcome these issues in part, in our first year we’ve hosted three impactful events reaching over 300 existing Civil and public servants to inspire, celebrate and invigorate our community.
We believe that those in public service should be celebrated, their work although often nameless and faceless shapes society and makes a huge difference. By providing high quality events, workshops digital resources and more, we centre the nuance of the ‘black experience’ in all we do to make a BIG difference!
Our work is completely independent of the ‘government’ and we are not linked in any way to the Civil Service. Whilst we may partner with or work with local councillors or MP’s we are also politically neutral as the public sector continues to operate regardless of the government of the day. Any partnerships/collaborations with government organisations or local authorities as well as current or former political figures is done so with careful consideration.
“Thanks for being so vulnerable and authentic. The afternoon was so relatable a beacon of hope indeed.”

“It's just comforting to be with BAME colleagues who experience the same barriers/issues but for once we are collectively together in a safe environment being our authentic self. Everything the speakers touched on I have experienced and it was "wow we all go through these challenges across the civil service" but often you think it's just where you work. I don't usually go to networking events but this one seems very unique, real and special.”
